Ushguli is really an old little village with fantastic mountain view and plenty of history – a breath of ancient Georgia some might say :)! It is considered to be the highest settlement in Europe ( 2400m ) and the area is a UNESCO heritage site. Although, it is a difficult road to get there (60 km from Mestia takes around 3 hours!), but certainly a must do while in Svaneti.
Since the new road was opened, connecting Mestia with the rest of Georgia, the area started to modernise quite rapidly. Looks like Mestia has a mission to become a european style resort.
So is Ushguli, almost every house is guest house now, lots of new roofs, modern gates. But still, its in a great contrast with Mestia – young men still rides horses, lots of free-range livestock around, feels like it hasn’t changed as much.
I went a little behind the village and spotted some very friendly horses !
